I was busy this weekend first throwing, and then recovering from a birthday party. I think it was quite a success. The guests seemed to have fun, and the guest of honor DEFINITELY enjoyed herself! =) Her dinner request was pizza and fruit salad, and since we invited nearly fifty people, and most of those RSVP'd I wanted to be sure to have plenty of food... So I cooked eight 16" pizzas. Apparently this was a bit much as I brought home three of those, and left about a quarter of one with my parents. (Rental fee for letting us use their house. ;)) So in one way, it was nice to eat left-overs all day yesterday, but that meant that we ate pizza for four meals in a row! Well, five for Shorty and the kids as they ate the last of it for breakfast this morning! =?
Last night after supper I was thinking that I may not want to eat pizza for six weeks! That's a stretch, because I LOVE pizza. In fact, my brother and I argued when we were in high school about which of us could eat pizza for the most consecutive meals! =) But then I was reminded of the children of Israel when they were wandering in the wilderness. They ate manna for 40 YEARS!!! I was getting sick of pizza after less than TWO DAYS! And all of a sudden, I had a whole lot more compassion for their grumbling in the wilderness. I'm a whole lot like they were-- after all, people are people no matter their age, race, or place in history. And God is God, and is FAITHFUL to His people in spite of our sin! =)
They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, "Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger." Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily." So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, "At evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against the LORD. For what are we, that you grumble against us?"
Exodus 16:1-7
Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people of Israel also wept again and said, "Oh that we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at." Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of bdellium. The people went about and gathered it and ground it in handmills or beat it in mortars and boiled it in pots and made cakes of it. And the taste of it was like the taste of cakes baked with oil.
Numbers 11:4-8
Even when they had made for themselves a golden calf and said, 'This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,' and had committed great blasphemies, you in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud to lead them in the way did not depart from them by day, nor the pillar of fire by night to light for them the way by which they should go. You gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst. Forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.
Nehemiah 9:18-21
Praise the LORD! I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them. Full of splendor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and merciful. He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever. He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the inheritance of the nations. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy; they are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name! The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!
Psalms 111:1-10
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
