Nothing You Can Do...

I've mentioned that I really enjoy reading the Chronicles of Narnia for their wealth of theology.  I was reminded of a passage in Prince Caspian as I was listening to a message yesterday.

"... 'Do you mark all this well, King Caspian?'
'I do indeed, Sir,' said Caspian. 'I was wishing that I came of a more honourable lineage.'
'You come of the Lord Adam, and the Lady Eve,' said Aslan. 'And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on the earth. Be content.'

In the message I listened to, the speaker was reminding us that in Christ, God is always favorably disposed towards us.  I affirm that with my mind, but often my heart speaks differently.  Often I live as though my actions can make God love me less, or they can improve my standing with Him.  How differently would I live if I remembered that God is always completely for me in Christ.  When God sees me, He sees me as His beloved child through the lens of Jesus' perfection.  My sin was atoned for in Jesus, and His righteousness has been tallied in my column.  All that is good in me is a gracious gift of God, my Father.

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Philippians 2:12-13
